General Rules

First to register, last to perform

1) When a class has begun on stage, registration for next class is ended. Contestants must be ready to perform when called.

2) A Novice Dancer or Fiddler is one who has competed no more than 3 years and has never placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

3) A Novice Dancer will dance a reel only and in all Novice fiddle classes, a fiddle player has the choice to play a waltz, jig or reel.

4) The 8 and under fiddle category will play a tune of their choice.

5) In the event of a tie, dancers will be called back to dance a clog, jig and reel. Fiddlers who tie, will be asked to play their waltz, jig and reel. This applies to 12 and under, 13-18, Open Class and Group categories.

6) Contestants in the Intermediate and 50 and over stepdancing classes will dance a clog, jig or reel.

7) All contestants in 12 and under, 13-18 and open Class will dance a clog, jig and reel, in that order.

8) Fiddler classes will be allowed one accompanist only. Dancers will be allowed one fiddler and one Accompanist only.

9) Fiddlers will be judged on time, tone, technique and overall accuracy. Dancers will be judged on variety and quality of steps, timing and choreography (overall performance).

10) The Twin Fiddle Class must play two contrasting tunes of their choice.

11) Novelty Step Category will consist of 1 or more dancers who will build a character

or tell a story on stage.  Contestants may use a CD or live music of any kind as long as the dance moves are stepdancing. Contestants are required to bring 2 copies of their CD to the stage. Any vocals in the CD are acceptable.  The routine must not exceed 4 minutes.  The category marking will include costume, variety, timing, precision, clarity of steps and choreography.

12) Group dance categories are decided by averaging (3 members age 13+11+10 = 34 divided by the 3 members = 11.3 . This group would be in the 12 and under group or Junior Group category).  Each group will dance a routine of their choice, not necessarily a clog, jig and reel. But must not exceed 5 minutes.

13) Decisions of the judges will be finalized with the Ottawa Fiddle and Step Association committee if needed.
